Gastrointestinal problems in pets can be defined as any disruption of the gastrointestinal tract which is responsible for digestion and absorption. There are several different problems that can arise, from mild to severe depending on the area affected and its severity. Some conditions have obvious symptoms and some do not. In some cases, it is possible to live with gastrointestinal problems for a long time before they are noticed.
The three main areas of the gastrointestinal tract that get affected in pet mammals are the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. The symptoms vary from mild irritation to complete blockage of one or more sections of the gut leading to death. There has been research done on humans which shows that even if only a small section of their intestine stops working, their health can be greatly affected by this stoppage because nothing can pass through due to upstream obstructions. So imagine what must happen when all 3 segments are obstructed at once? This is why it is important to find out if your pet has any gastric problems as soon as possible.
The most common signs of Gastrointestinal problems in pets are Vomiting, Diarrhea, Constipation, Lethargy, Loss of appetite, Acidity of the stomach, Bloating, Weight Gain/Loss, Foul-smelling stool.
